About the Band
Calgary Police Service Pipe Band was formed in 1973 by Bill Crabbe, then a Sergeant with the Calgary Police Service. Modelled after the Edinburgh Police Pipe Band, it was created to represent the police service and the city through piping, drumming, ceremonial duties and public performance. Its first major public appearance came in 1975, when it led the Calgary Stampede Parade.
The band is made up of serving and retired Calgary Police Service members alongside civilian volunteers. It performs at police, civic, memorial, cultural and community events, while also maintaining a competitive pipe band presence. The band wears the Prince Charles Edward Stuart tartan, and its regimental march, “The Calgary City Police Pipe Band,” was composed by founder and first Pipe Major Bill Crabbe.
Today, the Calgary Police Service Pipe Band continues to act as a musical ambassador for both the Calgary Police Service and the City of Calgary, carrying the fine old tradition of pipes, drums and polished boots into modern public service.
