About the Band
Michigan Scottish Pipes & Drums is based in Detroit, Michigan, with members drawn from across the Detroit metropolitan area and Canada. The band was established in 1980 by Pipe Major William O’Donnell, growing out of graduates from the piping course he was teaching.
The band was founded with teaching at its core, encouraging new pipers and drummers while using rehearsal and competition to raise musical standards. It was later re-formed in 1994 to give O’Donnell’s students a stronger environment to keep developing their playing.
Today, Michigan Scottish competes in Grade 4 and performs throughout the Midwest at parades, ceremonies, concerts, college events, weddings, funerals and community occasions. The band wears the MacDonnell of Keppoch tartan and continues to carry forward its founder’s teaching legacy.
