About the Band
Edmonton Youth Pipe Band is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and traces its roots back to 1929, when Pipe Major John Robertson formed the Edmonton Boys’ Pipe Band. It is recognised as the oldest pipe band in Edmonton and has operated continuously under the Edmonton Boys’ Pipe Band Association, a non-profit organisation.
Originally known as Edmonton Boys’ Pipe Band, the organisation changed its performance name to Edmonton Youth Pipe Band in November 2012 to reflect a more inclusive youth membership. The band welcomes young people, generally aged 8 to 18, and focuses on teaching Highland piping and drumming to competition standard.
Today, Edmonton Youth Pipe Band remains the only all-youth pipe band in Northern Alberta, run by volunteers and instructors. It continues to develop young pipers and drummers through tuition, performance and competition, maintaining a youth pipe band tradition that has lasted for nearly a century.
