About the Band

The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band is based in Ottawa, Canada, and was established in 1896, making it Canada’s oldest civilian pipe band. The band was formed by D. L. McLean and first performed in the nation’s capital on Burns Night, January 25, 1896, marking the first time a pipe band was heard in Ottawa.

Originally connected with the Sons of Scotland Benevolent Association, the band became an important part of Scottish cultural life in Canada’s capital. Its early history is only partly documented, but records note James Anderson as an early leader in the 1900s.

Today, the band remains active as a community and performance organisation, providing piping and drumming tuition, supporting youth development through the Ottawa City Piping College, and performing at civic, cultural, and commemorative events.

With more than a century of continuous tradition behind it, the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band stands as one of Canada’s key links between Scottish heritage and public music-making. Still going after 130 years: not so much a pipe band as a historical monument with drones.
