About the Band
Gordon’s School Pipe Band, formally the Gordon’s School Pipes and Drums, is based at Gordon’s School in West End, near Woking, Surrey. The school was founded in 1885 as the Gordon Boys’ Home, the national memorial to General Charles Gordon, and its pipe band tradition dates from the school’s earliest years.
The original band was based at the Gordon Boys’ Home in Dover and was taught by the Pipe Major of the Seaforth Highlanders, then stationed at Dover Castle. After the Dover home was bombed in 1941, the band relocated to West End, where Gordon’s School is now based. At that time, the band had six boys and has since grown into a 50-strong school Pipes and Drums.
The band wears military-style uniform with Gordon tartan and leads the school’s annual parade through Whitehall. It has performed at Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle, the Lord Mayor’s Show and Menin Gate, and has competed at the Scottish Schools and World Pipe Band Championships. Today, it remains one of Gordon’s School’s most distinctive traditions.
