About the Band

96th Highlanders Pipes and Drums is a youth pipe band based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The band originated in the early 1960s as the Saskatoon Boys Pipe and Drum Band. In the early 1980s, girls from the Bonnie Bluebells Girls Pipe Band joined, and the group became Saskatoon Optimist Pipes and Drums. In 1989, it adopted the name 96th Highlanders Pipes & Drums.

The name honours the 96th Canadian Infantry Battalion, formed in Saskatoon in 1915. The battalion, known as the “Canadian Highlanders”, served in the First World War and had its own pipe band of twelve pipers and six drummers. The battalion formally presented its cap badge to the Saskatoon youth band in 1966.

Today, 96th Highlanders continues as a non-profit youth organisation, promoting Highland piping and drumming through teaching, performance and competition in Saskatchewan.
