Scotch College Pipes & Drums is the pipe band programme of Scotch College, Melbourne. The school has had its own pipe band since 1946, when Donald “Danny” McPherson was appointed pipe tutor. Before that, the school’s cadet unit used Hawthorn Pipe Band for ceremonial events.

The band grew out of the school’s Scottish heritage and became part of major school occasions, including the annual tattoo and retreat ceremony, ANZAC Day parades, street fairs and wider community events. It remains one of Australia’s best-known school pipe band programmes, giving pupils structured tuition in piping and drumming.

Scotch College has also built a strong competitive record in youth grades. The Melbourne school fields multiple bands, including Novice Juvenile groups, and has appeared at major Australian contests and the World Pipe Band Championships. In 2024, Scotch College #2 was reported as winner of the World Novice Juvenile B title, a significant result for an Australian school band.

The band has also enjoyed high-profile public moments, including performing “Mull of Kintyre” with Paul McCartney in Melbourne in 2017.
