About the Band

Portland Metro Youth Pipe Band is the youth programme of Portland Metro Pipe Band, based in the Portland, Oregon area. The parent organisation was formed in 2006 and is described as Oregon’s only Grade 2 competitive pipe band, led by Pipe Major Mark Tomasetti and Drum Sergeant Andrew Finley.

The youth band was formed in 2009 to give young pipers and drummers a structured route into Highland piping and drumming. It offers instruction for children aged roughly 8 to 18, with tuition on both pipes and drums from experienced competitive players.

Its purpose is not just to produce contest players, but to keep Scottish music active in the wider Portland community through lessons, performances and local events. The youth band sits alongside the senior Portland Metro Pipe Band, whose members help teach and support the programme.

Portland Metro’s wider organisation has competed at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow and the North American Championships in Ontario, and has performed with The Chieftains. That gives the youth players a strong musical ladder to climb, rather than just a wee practice chanter wilderness.
