About the Band
Northwest Junior Pipe Band is a youth pipe band from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, based in the Seattle/Edmonds area of Washington. It was founded in 1995 by local piping and drumming instructors, including Scottish emigrant Charlie McNeill, whose ambition was to build a band dedicated to teaching young players. Early figures included Ian MacDonald, Colin MacRae, Lawrie MacKenzie, Kevin Auld, Marcie MacRae and Davie Moore.
The band began as a gathering of students, parents and instructors, and by 1999 was competing at local events, with the Tacoma Highland Games noted as its first contest. After an early dip when older members aged out, the organisation rebuilt and grew into one of the best-known youth pipe band programmes in the region.
NWJPB’s mission is to provide musical and leadership experience for young pipers and drummers aged 8 to 18. The band wears MacKenzie tartan, partly reflecting Charlie McNeill’s Highland Light Infantry connection.
The band has performed and competed locally and internationally, including trips to Scotland and appearances at the World Pipe Band Championships. In short, Northwest Junior Pipe Band is a proper youth-development success story.
