About the Band

Moorabbin City Pipe Band was formed on 20 February 1966 in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Its beginnings are linked to David Reid, a post-war Scottish immigrant from Fife, who helped establish a pipe band for the growing City of Moorabbin. At the time, the thinking was that any self-respecting suburb deserved both a brass band and a pipe band, so Moorabbin clearly decided to do things properly.

The band grew into a serious competition outfit while also retaining strong local community roots. Today it competes in Grade 2 and is led by Pipe Major Kelvin Mounsey and Leading Drummer Edward Roxburgh.

Moorabbin wears the William Bruce tartan, designed in memory of former Pipe Major Bill Bruce, who had a long association with the band. The Scottish Register of Tartans notes that the design was derived from the Bruce tartan in honour of William Murray Bruce, a former Pipe Major and piper with Moorabbin City Pipe Band.

In recent seasons the band has remained active on the Victorian contest scene, including success at competitions such as Haileybury, where Moorabbin City won the top contested grade in 2026.
