About the Band
Lord Selkirk RFM Pipe Band, formally Lord Selkirk Robert Fraser Memorial Pipe Band, is a youth pipe band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was established in 1957 after Pipe Major Robert Fraser, originally from Arbroath, Scotland, arrived in Winnipeg and was asked by the Manitoba Scout Council to start a Boy Scout pipe band. Early resources were basic, with instructors even making practice chanters from wood before the band eventually obtained proper pipes.
The band has had several names over the years, including Lord Selkirk District Boy Scout Pipe Band, Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band and Lord Selkirk Boys Pipe Band. Its current name honours Robert Fraser, the founding pipe major. Although it began as a boys’ band, membership is now open to both boys and girls.
Lord Selkirk RFM wears Ancient Douglas tartan and fields both performance and competition groups. It is known as a Grade 4 youth band, performing across Western Canada and at cultural events such as Folklorama. The band has also travelled regularly to Scotland since 1996 and has performed for members of the British Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in Churchill, Manitoba in 1970.
