About the Band
Georgetown Pipe Band is a civilian pipe band from Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. The band was established in 1942 and is one of the older civilian pipe bands in Ontario, with roots reaching back into the 1930s. During the Second World War, when many male players were away on active service, the band continued as the Georgetown Girls Pipe Band, taught and guided by members of the original group.
The band’s first public performance as the girls’ band was on 1 July 1943, and it became well known across Ontario through the 1940s and 1950s, travelling to events in Canada and the United States. Later, the organisation returned to a mixed/community pipe band identity and continued as a teaching and competition band.
Today, Georgetown Pipe Band competes on the Ontario Highland Games circuit and describes itself as both a competition band and a teaching band for pipers and drummers of all levels. Recent public profiles list it as a Grade 4 competition band, offering instruction in pipes and drums.
