About the Band

City of Ipswich Pipe Band is based in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, and is one of the country’s older pipe bands. It was formed in 1909 by the Ipswich Caledonian Society, with the aim of promoting pipe band music, teaching piping and drumming, supporting social life, and helping Scottish migrant families settle into the area.

The band’s early formation was led by Pipe Major James Mustard and Drum Major Ben Ford. In 1922, a split with the Caledonian Society led to the band reforming separately as the Scottish Thistle Pipe Band, later led by Pipe Major Alick Anderson and champion Pipe Major Angus Macpherson. The band went into recess during the Great Depression, reformed in 1934, and returned to competition with a younger line-up.

After the Second World War, when many members had served, the band rebuilt and enjoyed strong competition success, including wins in Maryborough, Bundaberg, Lismore, Kyogle, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Maclean, Brisbane and Wooroolin. It was upgraded to A Grade in 1954 after B Grade success in 1953 and 1954.

Today, City of Ipswich Pipe Band continues as a community and teaching band, keeping Scottish music active in Queensland.
