About the Band

Australian Federal Police Pipes & Drums is the pipe band associated with the Australian Federal Police, based around Canberra. It grew out of Canberra City Pipes and Drums, which was formed in 1991 by Bob McCaffrey, Rex French, Ted Howell and Angus Cattanach to give Australia’s national capital its own ceremonial pipe band. In 1993, Canberra City Pipes and Drums was appointed the Honorary Pipe Band to the Australian Federal Police.

The band later became known also as AFP Pipes and Drums. After being invited to the International Police Tattoo in Adelaide, Canberra City Pipes and Drums agreed in January 2006 that the band could use the AFP Pipes and Drums name as well. The AFP has supported the band with uniform items and performance opportunities, and the band displays police insignia and black-and-white dicing on its glengarries and drums.

The AFP describes its Pipes and Drums as a volunteer group of musicians from Canberra City Pipes and Drums, performing at public and ceremonial events in support of AFP activities. The band has appeared across Australia and overseas, representing both the police service and Canberra’s piping community.

It is not primarily a competition outfit; its strength is ceremonial work, public duties, community performances and police representation.
