About the Band
443 Squadron RCAF Pipes & Drums is a Canadian military-style pipe band connected with 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, based at Patricia Bay/Victoria, British Columbia. The squadron itself has a long service history: it was formed in February 1944 from No. 127 Squadron, disbanded after the war, then reactivated in 1974 in the anti-submarine helicopter role before becoming 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron in 1995.
The pipe band was formed in 1999 and is made up of tri-service and civilian volunteer musicians. It wears RCAF tartan with air force blue, helping maintain the musical identity and ceremonial presence of the Canadian Forces.
The band supports squadron and military events, including official parades and commemorations. References to the band appear in Canadian piping circles, including accounts of players helping 443 Squadron Pipes & Drums for official squadron duties.
While not best known as a major competition band, 443 Squadron RCAF Pipes & Drums sits firmly in the service-band tradition: ceremonial, community-facing, and tied to the identity of an operational air force unit.
